Local Businesses and Resources for New & Growing Families In And Around Lynchburg, Virginia
I became a mother in Central Virginia. Without the support of many of the people and businesses listed below, my motherhood, breastfeeding, labor and delivery journeys would have looked very different.
When it comes to pregnancy, birth and parenthood, I am a believer in educating yourself as much as possible ahead of time. There were areas I succeeded in that and areas where I really had to just wing it! In the midst of my own growth, I was, and still am, so thankful for the resources I’ve listed below.
I hope they can be as much of a support to you as they were to me!
I have also included multiple resources that have been recommended by others but I do not have personal experience with. I’ve added an asterisk to any business below I have worked with personally.

Midwives
What is a Midwife?
A midwife is a trained healthcare professional who supports healthy women during prenatal care, labor, birth, and the early postpartum period. Depending on your needs and risk level, this care can happen at home, in a birth center, or in specific hospital settings.
If you expect a low-risk pregnancy and want a natural birth, a midwife can be a great choice. Research shows that women with midwife-led care often have fewer medical interventions while achieving safe outcomes for both mother and baby. Studies also indicate that mothers receiving midwife-led care are more likely to start breastfeeding successfully. They are less likely to need interventions like episiotomies or cesareans in low-risk pregnancies.
Doulas
What is a Doula?
A doula is a trained professional who offers emotional, physical, and informational support to a mother before, during, and after childbirth. Unlike a midwife, who delivers babies, a doula focuses on comfort and advocacy. Their goal is to help families feel confident and cared for throughout the birth process.
Doulas can assist families in hospitals, birth centers, or at home. They work alongside midwives and obstetricians as part of the birth team. Their presence can make a big difference, helping moms feel calmer, more supported, and better prepared for labor. Doulas are linked to shorter labors, lower cesarean rates, and greater satisfaction with the overall experience.
